ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a review of disaster risk reduction practice to help frame the case studies in Part II. The chapter is divided into four areas of professional practice. Each interacts with the others on the ground but is separated here to help analysis. Two areas are predominantly considered to be the responsibility of urban development and two of disaster management. Where disaster risk reduction works best, the activities of both groups of professionals are integrated and, most importantly, wherever possible urban dwellers and their civil society organizations are involved. Table 3.1 presents these areas of professional practice and for each identifies core activities and lead stakeholders.
