ABSTRACT

Key questions facing the South African government are the extent to which coal-fired electricity generation will be increased, the technologies that will be deployed, and to what extent the full costs involved will be integrated into the market mechanisms related to electricity supply or borne by the commercial enterprises involved. This chapter explores these questions, rather than evaluating solutions, in the hope of contributing to a profound improvement in national energy planning, including information management and resource and technology assessment with full life-cycle analysis.
