ABSTRACT

Societies today face an impressive increase in exposure to expert information. It has become increasingly common to hear experts on the radio and TV defining what kinds of problems societies face and how they should best deal with these problems. Experts tell people what may or may not be dangerous about nuclear power, why people starve in certain parts of the world, how large a population of a certain species is required to be in order to prevent extinction, and what substances contribute to an increased greenhouse effect.
