ABSTRACT

The Snake River is a major tributary of the Columbia River in the United States. It flows from its source in Yellowstone National Park through the states of Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon and Washington. Many dams were built on the Snake River during the 20th century to provide hydropower, irrigation and navigation to fuel the region's economic development. But that economic development – the dominant priority at the time – has come at the expense of the river's salmon population, which has declined dramatically.
