ABSTRACT
The Botswana community-based natural resource management (CBNRM) programme has often been regarded as one of the most successful and most progressive of its kind in the region. It is based on a model in which the management of key natural resources undergoes devolution of power from state to local communities. As it is a conservation-based development programme, the economic component is paramount. A monetary infusion from natural resources, which are valued on their income-earning potential, is aimed at encouraging communities to diversify local economic activities, increase the value of natural resources and produce long-term community-based economic models.
