ABSTRACT
Over the last decade, increasing attention has been paid to socio-economic aspects of rural development and to understanding the social processes in rural systems in developing countries. Whereas previously, technical solutions were frequently seen as the key to successful development, there has been growing recognition of the need to understand social dimensions of development to ensure that interventions lead to improvements in the livelihoods of households.
