ABSTRACT

Despite somewhat different perspectives, rooted in their respective biophysical and social sciences, biologists and economists have much common cause in wishing to see natural and environmental resources managed and used for the welfare of present and future generations. As other chapters in this book show, an understanding of resource values is crucial to our understanding of livelihoods and the subsequent planning of projects and policies that attempt to enhance rural livelihoods. The purpose of this chapter is to present some alternative ways that these values can be used within decision-making frameworks in order to provide an understanding of rural livelihood systems and provide policy-relevant information.
