ABSTRACT
Soil classification in Bulgaria was designed to serve as a basis for soil inventory and mapping. The new Bulgarian classification (Ninov, 2002) also aims at correlation and harmonization with soil databases and maps of the European Union. The classification has national coverage (Table 18.1). Although Bulgaria is a relatively small country it has diverse environmental conditions containing 20 of the 32 reference groups of the World Reference Base for Soil Resources (WRB). Compared with an older classification (Kojnov, 1987), the new one has broader scope and includes urban soils and soils deeply transformed by agriculture. Bare rock and underwater sediments are not recognized as soils in this classification. Because the Bulgarian language uses the Cyrillic alphabet, the soil names are provided in English.
