ABSTRACT

Adaptation has become an important topic for the climate change community and is gaining prominence as an item on development agendas. 1 Development can be viewed as a process of social change that involves realizing collectively defined aspirations matched by the capacity to carry out this change. Development interventions can help to enable communities to cope better with existing stresses and hopefully adapt to future stress endogenously, which is critical at a time of rapid environmental and climatic changes. Equally, failing to adapt could well undermine development and inhibit more inclusive and sustainable human development in the long term.
