ABSTRACT

This chapter presents the results and analysis of different carbon pathways, entailing different levels of reduction of carbon emissions, for the UK through to 2050. The results come from the application of the MARKAL-MED model, the structure and working of which are briefly described in Chapter 4. This chapter focuses on the decarbonization pathways themselves, their energy-economic system implications, choices between technologies, and interactions between technological changes and behavioural responses to price changes. Following the presentation of the results, there is a discussion of the insights and conclusions to which they lead, including the policy implications of seeking to attain these pathways to a low carbon economy. The full set of modelling results is given in the Appendix to Anandarajah et al (2009).
