ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the potential for accelerating the development of a number of emerging low carbon energy supply technologies, and the possible impact of accelerated development on UK energy system decarbonization pathways. The technologies covered here include a number of large scale renewables (wind power, marine energy, solar PV and bio-energy) and also nuclear power, carbon capture and storage and hydrogen fuel cells. Most of these are electricity generation technologies; as discussed in Chapter 5, the electricity sector may have an increasingly important role in the UK's future energy system.
