ABSTRACT

As we strive to improve the sustainability of urban developments, so there will be increasing pressure on urban areas to intensify their use of personal (walking, cycling) and public (buses, trams, trains) means of transport. In consequence, a greater fraction of the urban realm can be expected to be designed to favour pedestrians and cyclists as they walk or cycle to and from their destinations, perhaps via modes of public transport. They will thus be expected to spend more time outdoors. It is important then that this outdoor experience be pleasant, if this strategy is to succeed.
