ABSTRACT
During recent decades, the Arab Gulf region has been one of the fastest-growing regions in the world economy, predominantly as the result of a number of booming city economies. Many of these urban developments are an obvious result of the vast capital accumulation from the oil economy. More recently, however, policymakers have advanced the idea of service-based economies to shift away from oil dependency.
