ABSTRACT

The service sector has grown immensely in the last century and now dominates all modern economies (Bryson and Daniels, 1998). Industries in this sector can be divided into those servicing individuals (e.g. hairdressing) and households (e.g. supermarkets) and those servicing businesses (e.g. advertising). These are commonly referred to as consumer services and producer services respectively. The latter include very high value services – professional, creative and financial – that are termed advanced producer services, the subject of this chapter.
