ABSTRACT

The gap between science and decision-making has long been a gap of major concern. While science itself cannot provide the full knowledge base needed for complex decisions, the science component is important. This book reports on the Vulnerability and Resilience in Practice (VARIP) project that explores how in one developed scientific and assessment area, knowledge has entered into and informed decision-making. The various chapters enquire into the adequacy of science and assessment, but also explore in some detail the interface between science and decision-making. The scope is international and therefore a wide range of environmental threats and political systems is involved.
