ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to illustrate:

Why close connection to spatial planning for the land may be of value in developing the human dimension of marine planning and management;

How key theoretical debates regarding the purpose and process of terrestrial planning might serve to stimulate critical reflection upon the purpose and process of planning for the sea;

How new marine planning and management regimes can draw upon terrestrial planning experience and be tailored to particular cultural, legal and administrative contexts; and

How terrestrial planning can assist in understanding and delivering key aspects of EA.
