ABSTRACT
This chapter aims to:
Examine European Union (EU) maritime policy contexts, including the patterns of sea uses and regional development, and related environmental and institutional dimensions;
Review the development of EU marine and maritime policy;
Consider wider EU constitutional and political developments, with particular reference to the Lisbon Strategy;
Analyse the changing contexts of ideology and political development; and
Discuss interrelationships between EU development and maritime policy, including the ecosystem approach context, economic and social change, environmental management and planning, and maritime policy outcomes.
