ABSTRACT

More than 6.8 million hectares or 4.1 percent of the usable agricultural area were managed organically in the 27 countries of the European Union in 2006. Forty-one percent or 2.8 million hectares of the organic area is arable land, which is 2.7 percent of all arable land in the EU. Forty-five percent or 3.1 million hectares percent of the organic land is organic permanent grassland – 5.6 percent of all grassland in Europe. Additionally, there are more than 600′000 hectares cultivated with permanent crops – 5.6 percent of all permanent crops in Europe.
