ABSTRACT

Uganda is a land-locked country measuring 241,500km2. It is located in the eastern region of Africa and lies between latitude 1°30 south and 4° north and longitude 29°30 and 35° west. It is bordered by Kenya in the east, Tanzania and Rwanda in the south, Democratic Republic of Congo in the west and Sudan in the north. Most of Uganda forms part of the interior plateau of the African continent. It is characterized by flat-topped hills in the central, western and eastern parts of the country. The rise of the plateau in the eastern and western parts of the country is represented by mountainous topography found along the borders, for example the Rwenzori mountains and Mufumbira volcanoes in the west and Mt Elgon and Mt Kadaru in the east. About 20 per cent of the country is covered by water bodies such as Lake Victoria, Lake Albert, Lake Edward, Lake Kyoga and the River Nile (AFRENA, 1988).
