ABSTRACT

The methodology presented in this chapter is the first systematic approach at a national scale to develop, test and implement a methodology and tools for inventorying sacred natural sites based on an ecosystem and habitat types approach. The methodology has been developed based on data from around Mexico and is currently being tested in the states of Sinaloa, Sonora and Chihuahua in northwestern Mexico. This chapter presents the methodology in steps and also introduces the tools to accompany and implement each of them. The steps include guidance on the identification of the main stakeholders involved, the time frame suggested and the benchmarks to monitor a progress leading to a successful implementation of the proposed methodological framework. The chapter closes with the main findings drawn from implementation of the initial part of the methodology illustrated by two emblematic case studies of indigenous sacred natural sites. These examples can assist with making recommendations for further developing the criteria used in the methodology for the identification and distribution of sacred natural sites and sets an optimistic tone for future exercises of a similar nature. Lessons learned from this and other similar exercises will, with no doubt, render an ameliorated and enriched methodology.
