The development of biofuel capacities: strengthening the position of African countries through increased energy security

This chapter evaluates the potential contribution of biofuels in improving energy security in SSA, focusing on the role of sugar cane-based bioenergy. The next section provides some background on the development of biofuels. Section 2 explores some key energy security issues and their linkages to economic development. Section 3 gives an overview of the role that biofuels can play in improving energy security in SSA, using specific references to three African countries (Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia) to support the analysis and discussion.
