ABSTRACT

The port of Rotterdam is the largest port in Europe and functions as a trans-shipment hub as well as a gateway of goods to a large hinterland, including The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. The port area developed over time on the riverbanks of the Meuse River, which flows into the North Sea at Hoek van Holland, about 30km west of Rotterdam. The greater part of the port area is occupied by liquid bulk storage, chemical industry of all sorts and container terminals. A wide range of other commodities can also be found in the port of Rotterdam.
