ABSTRACT

Personal development covers any activity that improves awareness and identity, develops talents and potential, builds human skill and facilitates employability, enhances quality of life and contributes to the realisation of aspirations. Personal development is also about establishing identity, developing competence, purpose and integrity, and mature interpersonal relationships; managing emotions; and achieving autonomy and interdependence. Employee benefits can enhance both employers and employees by improving satisfaction, motivation, loyalty, productivity, innovation and quality. Employee surveys help organisations to find out personal development needs, preferences and problems, and they use the results to redesign parts of their organisation. Most employers in the public sector are looking for good planning and organisational skills – creativity and imagination are not commonly requested attributes.
