ABSTRACT

THIS SURVEY OF THE FIELD of natural resource economics is concerned with three broad themes. First, the emergence and full development of this specialized field is explored, and a few comments on that emergence are offered (some of this section draws on Bromley 1997). Then several broad issues that challenge the continued coherence of environmental and natural resource economics are discussed. Finally, challenges to the practitioners of the field are offered in the hope that they will reinvigorate the practical relevance of our field for informing public policy discussions.
