Introduction

Dealing with the risks of wildland fire is becoming an ever bigger component of land management activities and agency budgets. Catastrophic wildfire events in recent years have burned record amounts of acreage, taken human lives, cost billions of dollars in property damage, and required unprecedented expenditures for fire suppression activities. As a consequence, new and innovative ways to manage wildfire hazards are imperative.
