ABSTRACT

In this chapter, we discuss the social principle in the CIFOR Generic C&I Template (CIFOR 1999) that deals with human well-being, Principle 3: “Forest management maintains or enhances fair intergenerational access to resources and economic benefits” (Annex 1 in the Introduction). Part of this principle focuses on forest actors’ having “a reasonable share in the economic benefits derived from forest use” (Criterion 3.2). Another component requires an on-the-ground assessment of changes in resource accessibility over time. Yet another part deals with people’s thoughts and feelings about this question. One of the indicators is, “Local people feel secure about access to resources” (Indicator 3.1.5). A related criterion states that “People link their and their children’s future with management of forest resources” (Criterion 3.3).
