ABSTRACT
The most obvious feature of agricultural land use in Malaysia since independence is the rapid expansion of cultivated area. As discussed in Chapter 4, this is the fundamental cause of the deforestation that has occurred in the country. Table 5.1 summarizes land use information for Peninsular Malaysia, which is where most of the agricultural expansion has occurred. 1 It is also the only part of the country where land use surveys have been conducted on a regular basis. 2
