ABSTRACT

The western part of Timor Island is part of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) Province, located in southeastern Indonesia (Figures 24-1 and 28-1). Most of the region is classified as tropical semiarid, with low rainfall, from 1,000 to 1,500 mm per year, and a long dry season of seven to nine months. The population of the province is about 3.5 million, and almost half of this, 1.5 million, is concentrated in West Timor, creating heavy pressures on limited agricultural land.
