ABSTRACT

This chapter first looks at factors that influence the content and scope of grammar-teaching materials within coursebooks and dedicated grammar books: historical influences; research; current approaches, methods, and strategies; and designer preferences combined with marketing considerations. Of these, it appears to be the last which determines most decisions. A brief survey of three popular, published course materials for the international market reveals in more detail the main features of grammar-teaching components. It is concluded that modern coursebooks provide, in general, for effective grammar teaching and learning. The last section of the chapter makes specific recommendations for changes or additions.
