ABSTRACT

Subjects are taught in English as a second language in different school contexts throughout the world. This chapter looks at English-medium (EM) subject teaching for language majority and minority learners in Europe and for majority learners in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). EM subject teaching can be successful or not, depending largely on the English ability of learners. EM subject materials are distinct in their design and pedagogy and can help learners with developing language ability to learn subjects, and help teachers to teach them. Published EM materials are scarce, however, and, where EM education fails, as in SSA, this lack of resources can be detrimental to learning.
