ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the challenges that arise in writing materials for an English-speaking environment (ESE). The chapter begins by exploring issues related to the term ESE and identifying three defining characteristics of the context. It then focuses on two key issues that should be considered when writing materials for this context – firstly, learner autonomy and motivation, and secondly, culture; discussing them in terms of historical and current developments seen in the literature, and drawing out the implications associated with these.
