ABSTRACT

Blended learning (BL) has proved to be difficult to define, and its application in different contexts has changed over the years. In English language teaching, however, it is generally considered to refer to the blend of digital tools with face to face (f2f) ones used in physical classrooms with a teacher. This chapter initially explores what BL is and what BL materials are, describing current practice in materials development, ranging from commercial materials at one end of the spectrum to locally developed materials at the other. It stresses the need to develop materials in a principled way both for digital and for f2f contexts, to enable the work done in the f2f context to dovetail with that done online and vice versa. Secondly, the chapter aims to provide a practical introduction to ways in which materials can be developed within a BL framework locally, where educators are required to develop their own materials to meet specific needs. Practical examples of how this has been done are provided, as well as concrete guidelines designed to help educators develop such materials for their own teaching process.
