ABSTRACT

This chapter attempts to illuminate the process of developing materials for commercial publication from a writer’s perspective. Drawing on the authors’ experience of writing global ELT coursebooks, recent trends in materials writing for adults are described, for example, the increased focus on authenticity, the use of video, and the rise of digital learning and 21st-century skills. Topics such as homogeneity in materials writing, creating engaging, innovative materials, and incorporating theory are discussed, and new ways of working within the publishing industry which impact on the way writers write are explored.
