ABSTRACT

This chapter considers the role coursebooks, coursebook components, and teachers’ books play in the professional development of language teachers. It presents the results of a small-scale survey, designed for teachers and trainers, which suggest that teachers benefit developmentally from the use of these materials. It also explores the role that publishers play in providing professional support for teachers at different stages in their careers and makes recommendations for how publishers can support teacher learning by making explicit the theoretical underpinnings of the materials and providing ideas for their exploitation in the classroom.
