ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the issue of training teachers to write their own materials. From a historical perspective, it considers the fact that in the past teachers rarely received any formal training in how to write language learning materials. In more recent years, there has been an increasing number of MA programmes offering modules in materials development, and other training providers who offer shorter, more intensive training courses in materials writing. The chapter then goes on to look more closely at this latter type of course in terms of the participants, the length and delivery of the courses, and the approach taken by the trainer. A sample syllabus for such courses is given which could be used in its entirety or form the basis for shorter specialised courses, and a range of techniques and activities are presented which represent the type of training tasks that can be used with trainee materials writers.
