ABSTRACT

The article reflects the experience of Holy Communion during COVID-19 in the Latvian Lutheran congregations, based on the qualitative research conducted in the congregations of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Latvia (ELCL) and the author’s observations in the Latvian Lutheran congregations. COVID-19 pandemic has affected Holy Communion and the liturgy of Church services on temporary and also more permanent level in Latvian Lutheran churches. All surveyed parishes adjusted to the regulations and there was no particular resistance to the new rules. The restrictions hit more parishes smaller in number, which ceased to celebrate Holy Communion. In the ELCL there was no serious discussion about celebrating the Eucharist remotely, the most likely because of very high theology of Communion. Communicants in the parishes preferred an individual Eucharist to that of intinction, it shows the theological emphasis on the vertical communion during Holy Communion. However, one has to conclude that this time marked a difference in all the churches between people who have digital skills and those who do not.
