ABSTRACT

Despite the growing popularity of the athlete-centered approach, coaches often face hurdles in effectively implementing it, as traditional coaching practices and established power structures can hinder the adoption of athlete-centered principles. To provide a practical example of how the Activist Approach can be applied in the context of strength and conditioning coaching, this chapter outlines a research project that incorporates elements of the Activist Approach, with a specific emphasis on Building the Foundation and implementing athlete-centered coaching through student-centered pedagogy. The Activist Approach provided a process and tools to better understand and incorporate athletes’ voices into their training, resulting in improved athlete engagement.
