ABSTRACT

Engaging in an Activist Approach with adolescent girls provides opportunities for them to be empowered about their own learning and movement experiences in a physical education (and ultimately school) setting. This chapter will offer insight into (a) the process of engaging girls in an Activist Approach, (b) how to navigate bureaucratic and institutional barriers in US K-12 schools when utilizing this approach, and (c) the processes and challenges of exploring social identities within this approach and schooling structures. The chapter concludes with the importance of how the individual and collective identities of the students influence the activist experiences particularly when the teacher/researcher’s social identities are different than those of the students.
