ABSTRACT

Activist approaches have been used as a pedagogical way to co-create programmes with young people in order to better address their needs and aspirations as well as move beyond a deficit-based paradigm. The aim of this chapter is to describe two experiences in using an Activist Approach with young people in sport for development programmes in Brazil and Australia. The aim of this chapter is to describe the challenges and opportunities in using an Activist Approach in sport for development programmes as well as emphasise how this approach works towards praxis (the combination of action and reflection where young people and educators look at reality, critically reflect upon that reality, and take transformative action to change that reality). This praxis unfolded in small steps in the longer-term process of micro-level change for the young people involved.
