ABSTRACT

This chapter sets the context in which Dalit Christians in rural Andhra Pradesh live with their faith and culture in the reality of caste society and provides some description of how access to the village, and to the church took place, as a prelude to reporting on the qualitative data in the chapter which follows. The historical background, the Baptist missions and the contemporary realities of the Madiga village and people, which are at the centre of the qualitative research, are provided.
