ABSTRACT
Though the introduction to and exploration of the theories and methods of intersectionality as well as its relevant empirical study are still in their infancy in China, the intersectional perspective is not unfamiliar to Chinese academia, particularly gender studies scholars who often employ it in their research, because of its great significance to the improvement of Chinese feminism and development of Chinese society. Through examining the translation of intersectionality-related English scholarship, the Chinese books and papers which dealt with intersectionality per se or deployed intersectionality as their analytic tool, together with English scholarship on the Chinese social and gender issues from an intersectional perspective or on intersectional narratology published in a Chinese academic journal, this chapter analyzes the circulation of intersectionality in China, explores the problems and difficulties during its circulating process, and probes the reasons for these difficulties, which shows an increasing depth and width of its circulation in China in recent three decades along with critical reflections on and flexible utilization of intersectionality. Besides, by applying the “cultural awareness” approach put forward by the foremost Chinese social anthropologist Fei Xiaotong and taking Chinese traditions and current conditions into account, the chapter takes in-depth thought into the ways to further promote the circulation and situated use of intersectionality in China under the profound Chinese social and cultural contexts.
