ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a unit for teaching difference-in-differences, a core quasi-experimental research design used within the social sciences. This unit focuses on the conceptual design, empirical exposition, and threats to validity of the difference-in-differences approach. Over two class meetings, students engage with this methodology through a lecture, discussion of two seminal journal articles, and a data analysis lab exercise. Upon completion of this unit, students should be equipped with basic tools to design, implement, and consume research using difference-in-differences.
