Write What You See, Not What You Know

Using the visual arts as a framework, this chapter provides a lesson in performing observations and writing accompanying field notes. The lesson uses students’ prior knowledge about how they recognize familiar images to broaden this knowledge toward seeing in new ways. Additionally, the lesson offers suggestions for writing field notes using elements of art as a means to recall images and create vivid descriptive records of observations.
