ABSTRACT

As educational scholars continue to use approaches in qualitative research that are rooted in values of social justice and equity, it is imperative that their study designs reflect the same kind of ethos from beginning to end. In particular, educators that teach qualitative research courses must provide guidance to students to ensure that their studies display congruence when they utilize critical and poststructural theories in their scholarship. This lesson utilizes a “Pyramid of Congruence” activity that teaches students how they should carry their critical or poststructural epistemological foundations throughout their research. Specifically, the activity showcases the need to start with a strong understanding of critical and poststructural theories in order to interweave them throughout a qualitative project.
