ABSTRACT

The teaching of research often begins with a study of methodologies, providing instruction to students about the tools they will need in order to answer questions in a scholarly way. But learning to ask those very questions well is a precursor to that skillset: identifying and honing research topics and questions often proves incredibly difficult for novices and, if they do not know how to do so, they may find those methodological lessons irrelevant. The chapters in this section scaffold the process of teaching and learning how to craft research questions, from enabling students to understand the role of their passions, to supporting the design and selection of an appropriate question from the myriad possibilities available within that area.
