ABSTRACT

What makes art exquisite? Is it the medium used to render the image, the meaning of its subject, or the expertise of the techniques used in the craft? As an introductory lesson, this chapter calls on students to be the masters of their own creativity. Here, an exercise in illustrating a self-portrait leads to discovering the value and interconnectedness of the qualitative dimension in mixed methods research. In this way, the qualitative research phase explores the perspective of participants. Data derived from this practice is then used to build the quantitative research phase by emphasizing the following central mixed methods components: interaction, sequencing, prioritization, and integration within the study design. The end of this chapter reinforces lessons learned by reviewing foundational concepts of qualitative to quantitative mixed methods design, giving context to the lesson, and describing how the learner conceptualizes this skill in mastering qualitative data in mixed methods research.
