ABSTRACT

This chapter provides a lesson on how to conceptualize and write about the policy implications of students’ research projects using an exercise that involves dividing a cake and providing a rationale for the division. In the process, students are challenged with defining equity and exploring how it may mean different things to different people in different situations. In doing so, students are pushed to think about the implications of their topic from different angles, which guides the writing process for policy implications. The lesson focuses on three key concepts and skills in writing policy implications: defining terms, envisioning outcomes, and crafting implications that take into account the nuances of the terms and outcomes. The intent is to support students to develop more nuanced implications, create strong rationales, and understand the potential for intended and unintended consequences.
