ABSTRACT

Volgograd Oblast is situated in the south-east of the Eastern European Plain. It has an international border with Kazakhstan to the east. Astrakhan Oblast and the Republic of Kalmykiya lie to the south-east, and the oblasts of Rostov, Voronezh and Saratov, respectively, are to the south-west, the north-west and the north. The Oblast’s main rivers are the Volga and the Don. Elections to the Oblast’s legislature and governorship were held on 8 September 2019. Bocharov was re-elected Governor with 76.8% of the votes cast. In 2020 Volgograd Oblast’s gross regional product (GRP) amounted to 978,858m. roubles, or 394,257 roubles per head. Its main industrial centres are at Volgograd, Volzhskii and Kamyshin. At the end of 2020 there were 1,617 km of railways in the oblast. The region’s principal agricultural products are grain, sunflower seeds, vegetables and cucurbits (gourds and melons). Horticulture, beekeeping and animal husbandry are also important.
