ABSTRACT

Kirov Oblast is situated in the east of the Eastern European Plain. It is bordered by Archangel Oblast and the Republic of Komi to the north, Perm Krai and the Udmurt Republic to the east, the Republics of Tatarstan and Marii-El to the south, and Nizhnii Novgorod, Kostroma and Vologda Oblasts to the west. Its main river is the Vyatka. On 10 May 2022 Vasilyev tendered his resignation as Governor. Putin immediately appointed Aleksandr Sokolov, hitherto an official in the federal presidential administration, as Acting Governor. The Oblast’s agriculture consists mainly of animal husbandry and the production of grain, flax and vegetables. Agriculture employed 9.1% of the workforce and contributed 7.8% of GRP in 2020. There are significant deposits of peat and phosphorites. The main industries are mechanical engineering, the production of electrical energy, metal working, chemicals, and the processing of agricultural goods.
