ABSTRACT

Many coaches working in corporate contexts will be guided to focus on organizational objectives and, sometimes, to address a performance problem for a particular person. There is often an expectation that the coach will produce results for the contracting party in line with their organizational goals. Industry experts maintain that clients’ intrinsic aspirations can induce meaningful change. Angela expresses curiosity about Jill's reaction. Jill acknowledges there are opportunities for her own development, but also points out that there are cultural barriers in the organization that she is up against as one of the few women, and the only woman of color, in leadership. Angela needs to make Jill feel comfortable enough to trust her and speak freely. Angela must navigate the tension between what is in Jill's locus of control and the wider sociocultural factors and organizational environment that impact the very problem Jill presents.
